On the Perils of Global Warming
We Are All In Danger
The Earth is growing warmer. Only Republicans disagree with science on that point. And there is no doubt that mankind has been pumping carbon into the atmosphere faster than at almost any other time in the Earth's history. We have accelerated global warming by cutting down trees and burning fossil fuels faster than we and the Earth can suck all that carbon out of the air.
Although the Earth won't become like Venus any time soon the atmosphere is trapping more of the sun's heat and that in turn means that the air currents are changing. Heat pushes the air around and creates all the jet streams and rain storms. As more hot air swirls across our northern atmosphere we are at greater risk than ever before for an ecological collapse that could destroy the existing ecosystem in a matter of centuries.
But Some People Close Their Eyes to the Truth
Maybe people don't want to believe this because it is happening so slowly. Instead of trusting the science they are looking around saying, "Well, there are still trees in my neighborhood so everything must be okay." It's kind of like what happens when boil a frog in water. They say the frog won't realize the water is growing hotter and try to save itself, so it just sits there and dies.
We are not frogs. We know the Earth is growing warmer. We need to do something about all of this. We need to stop investing in fossil fuels and start investing in alternative fuel sources.
We Need to Invest in Future Technologies
One of the reasons why electric cars are not popular is that their batteries don't last as long as a tank of gas goes. But we need to invest more money in fast recharging technologies, not in making cars more fuel efficient. When it becomes possible to recharge an auto in just a few minutes we'll be able to put more electric cars on the road. That is the greatest possible savings in fossil fuel use. You don't get any more efficient than that.
Solar technology may not be the best solution for powering homes everywhere but we should encourage its use in more and more cities across the south, where the sun shines longer throughout the day. Hydroelectric dams sound like they are ecologically friendly but the dams create other environmental problems.
Recycling is also important. One way to recycle is to convert your food waste into compost. You don't have to live on a farm or have a big garden to benefit from compost. You can use compost to improve your yard's health.
My Final Thoughts
We should have learned some long term lessons by now but too many conservative politicians are running the states and the country. We need to vote them out of office so that more sensible people can take over and start converting our power structures to be safer for the environment. Our grand children will thanks us for being such forward thinkers!
